Be Kind to your mind

The purpose of the CURED (Cognitive Bias Modification Utilised to Rectify Errors for Depression) study is to test the effectiveness of a new procedure aimed at reducing distress associated with low mood.

Welcome to

WHY CURED?

Many people experience distress when they have depressive thoughts. When someone is feeling low, everyday or unclear situations can be interpreted in a more negative way. Over time, these patterns of thinking can increase distress and make low mood harder to shift.

Psychological research suggests that gently changing how people interpret everyday situations may help reduce this distress. Approaches based on this idea have shown promise in earlier research, but there is still much to learn about how they work best and for whom.

CURED has been created to explore this approach further. It is a self-guided programme that encourages people to consider alternative, more balanced interpretations of everyday situations through short reading tasks, word exercises, and simple questions. The programme has been developed by combining research on thinking patterns in depression with well-established techniques designed to help shift these patterns over time.

CURED has also been co-developed with people who have lived experience of low mood, helping ensure that the content feels relevant, realistic, and grounded in everyday life.

WHAT IS CURED?

CURED is a digital psychological programme that helps people practise more helpful ways of interpreting everyday situations.

The exercises focus on situations that could be understood in more than one way. By practising these skills over time, CURED aims to gently shift negative thinking.

CURED is not a replacement for therapy or medication, and people can continue with any existing care while using the application.

What makes CURED different?

CURED builds on earlier psychological approaches that explored how people interpret everyday situations, while introducing two important differences designed to make the programme more relevant and usable in real life.

Co-developed with lived experience

The scenarios used in CURED were created in collaboration with people who have personal experience of depression. This helped ensure they reflect real-life concerns and everyday situations, rather than being developed only in laboratory settings.

Designed for repeated use

Instead of a single or one-off session, CURED is designed to be used across several weeks. This allows people to practise gradually over time and reflect on how the exercises fit into everyday life.

Simple and structured

Each session follows a clear, guided format. Participants read short everyday scenarios, complete brief word-based tasks, and answer simple questions. No prior experience or specialist knowledge is needed.

Together, these features aim to support more sustained changes in thinking while keeping the programme accessible, flexible, and grounded in real-world experience.

Could CURED be helpful?

No single approach works for everyone, and CURED may not be right for all people.

However, previous psychological research suggests that helping people interpret ambiguous situations in a more balanced way can reduce negative thinking. CURED builds on this work and explores how this approach can be delivered in a practical, user-informed digital format.
